Hey folks,
I'm a long time TomTom user who's tomtom suffered an untimely death in a car accident. I've decided to replace my trusty old TomTom with a Garmin Nuvi 760 (I used to have a Nuvi 350 before and a quest before that).
Anyway, my TomTom is broken, my data card is fine. I know my favorites are stored in mapsettings.cfg, however I can't really get to the data. I've tried opening it in BBEdit (I'm an OSX user) and can't get mainly gibberish with some human readable text. Is there a better way to get favorites from a mapsettings.cfg file onto a computer? There are some locations I've saved that I don't have the addresses for that I'd love to retrieve so I can at least manually enter them into my new Nuvi.

- edited March 2008Use POIEdit. Delete the bottom line(s) with garbage.
- Heck, just change your ID to TomG03.
Any port in a storm is good for me. - Well I'm really quite conflicted. I loved my little TomTom. My GPS history is like this:
GarminEtrex->Magellan 315 -> Garmin GPS V -> Garmin Nuvi -> TomTom One V2 -> Garmin Nuvi 760
Also, I've had TeleNav on my Blackberry and TomTom Navigator 5 on a previous phone.
I'm a huge fan of TomTom, especially the new models. They have some fantastic features and as fas as I'm concerned the TomTom Navigation interface can't be beat. I also feel like TomTom does many things better like interpreting traffic data, POI speed, next turn arrows, etc.
However, in my area the TomTom maps are definitely inferior to the Navteq maps. TomTom shows more roads than the Garmin in this area, it shows almost all the same roads the Garmin shows, + a few driveways which it thinks are named navigable roads. This results in some odd routing at times, but was never a huge issue. I think the routing is not as bad, but it seems worse because of TomTom's poor ETA estimates.
Also, address locations in the Cleveland area are often quite a bit off in the TeleAtlas maps, often resulting in quite a bit of hunting for the address.
If someone compiled a Navteq mapset for the TomTom, it would be THE ultimate GPS. Maybe after TomTom gets TeleAtlas into their hands and with more mapshare data coming in things will improve in the US.
That would be bad for the competition.If someone compiled a Navteq mapset for the TomTom, it would be THE ultimate GPS.
:D
Personally I would like to see Mio & Navigon & HP make more noise - so all of them work their butt harder. :wink:- Up until early last year (unless I'm mistaken. . . again) TomTom DID use Navteq maps for some areas. They announced a decision then to use only Teleatlas from now on. (Makes sense with a Teleatlas bid in the pipe).
- They used NavTeq for a TomTom One in Europe, for a short time.
- The RIDER first edition in North America also came with NAVTEQ maps.
- Why can't we have GPS that uses both maps like Google Maps/Mapquest does? Now THAT would be the ultimate device!
- Of course they only use both in the sense that they use one in one area and another in different areas.
